Discovery Days : Malham Cove

Date
20 March 2010

Details
Saturday 20th March

This promises to be an exciting first Discovery Day of the season amongst the spectacular scenery of Malhamdale.

We break our journey briefly at Ferrybridge Services for a comfort stop and again in Skipton for coffee before a late morning arrival in Malhamdale. Alighting in the village of Airton we follow the Pennine Way into the former monastic village of Malham where we pause to eat our picnic lunch.

The main afternoon walk (for which walking boots are essential) takes us to Janet’s Foss and Gordale Scar (an awe inspiring vertical cleft in the limestone rock). After passing an Iron Age settlement we arrive on the treacherous pavement above Malham Cove. We descend the cove by a paved footpath to arrive back in Malham Cove. An easier and shorter alternative will be provided for those without boots.

We break the journey home at Skipton for a tea stop at the end of a classic Discovery Day. This is a day to be savoured amongst some of Britain’s finest limestone scenery.
